2023 NPIEN Accomplishments

  • Over 2,000 students participated in the Falanai Ala Guest Speaker and Mentoring Program.
  • The 22nd Annual Education Conference was held in-person for the first time in four years, with over 200 attendees, including participants via stream from Hawaii, Palau, and Missouri. 23 exhibitors participated in the College Career and Resource Fair.
  • Eight individuals received the NPIEN Service Awards, and 23 students received the Christina Diaz Scholar Award.
  • New Chapters were created: The Hawaii, Kauai Chapter and the Pacific: Palau, Chapter.
  • The Aloha Leadership Project awarded grants to seven schools who led their schools with Aloha, funded by Major Ssponsor GoFundMe.org.
  • The Advancing Peace Initiative in North Long Beach provided grant funds to support NPIEN’s efforts to lead with Aloha.
  • Sixty participated in the Annual Miniature Golf at Golf N Stuff, including 14 virtual golfers in Missouri, Hawaii, and New Jersey.
  • Eighty golfers, including 10 virtual golfers, participated in the 10th Annual Golf Tournament at the Lakewood Country Club.
  • NPIEN was a co-sponsor of the Safe Schools Conference in Anaheim, with over 600 attendees.
  • The School Talk Story with Dr. T features guest educators and a ukulele class every week and reaches over 200 viewers weekly.
  • LA Island Radio, an NPIEN Sponsor, hosts NPIEN guests monthly, to discuss education topics, with 3,000 listeners.

2024 NPIEN Goals and Initiatives

Background: Mission Statement

Uniting the resources of the village to strengthen families, the community, and to promote educational excellence.
Vision Statement: Who Are We? We are a Pacific Islander non-profit education organization that serves the Pacific Islander community. Although our particular focus is on Pacific Islander students, we will help any student or community pursue their educational goals.

  • Our members network and share resources with schools to support student academic achievement.
  • We provide financial aid and scholarship information for students and parents.
  • Our board members participate in school career day programs and mentoring programs.
  • We introduce career role models and mentors annually to approximately 1,000 students through our conferences and school visits.
  • We speak at academic conferences and introduce research on Pacific Islander students to educators.
  • Grant awards are available to support Pacific Islander student club programs.

Governance and Support Services Committee (GSS):

Provide Board Governance support for Audits, Board Nominating Committee, Review Bylaws, and oversee fund development activities, Grant applications, and Membership Benefits.

Provide professional mentoring to members in these areas: Business Services, Human Resources, Counselors, Pupil Services, Special Education, Classified Employees, Athletics, Alternative Education.

  • The Board By-Laws will be reviewed annually, and updates provided as needed by the GSS Committee.
  • Fund Development: Continue with the Annual Board Member Commitment of $300.00 ($180.00 for Student members. Fund Development activities will include the virtual or in-person Golf Tournament, HundredX, #GivingTuesday, Grants for the National Organization and Chapters, Savers Fundraiser, Escrip, and new access for donors: Venmo, GoFundMe link, QR Codes.
  • Ensure that all general members renew their membership. Conduct regular membership drives in addition to the Annual Sustaining Membership Drive, plus remind individuals on Social Media. Use Ohana Nights, or similar nights in each region, for monthly Membership Awareness meetings.
  • Schedule communication as a committee prior to the next Board Meeting to review goals and initiatives and provide assignments for Staff.

Educational Programs and Services Committee (EPS):

Provide Chapter Development activities to strengthen all chapters. Serve as the Annual Conference Committee. Oversee the Falana’i Ala Speaker and Mentoring Program, Aloha Leadership program, and Christina Diaz Scholars programs and others. Provide professional mentoring to colleagues in Adult Education, Curriculum, Instruction, & Evaluation, Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, Secondary Education, Higher Education collaboration.

  • Hold the Annual Conference on October 25-26, 2024, in-person with streaming, at Hayward High School. Create a rotation to other regions of NPIEN on an annual basis. Meet as a committee to provide support to the 2024 Conference Host, the Northern California Chapter, in determining a theme and speakers.
  • Use the new online directory to support Chapters, which would include ideas on the following: Goals, Membership Recruitment, calendar of activities, list of officers, the names of student charters, finances, and webpage updates. Update the listserv to include a sole e-mail address for each chapter.
  • Schedule communication as a committee prior to the next Board Meeting to review goals and initiatives and provide assignments for Staff.

Technology and Community Services (TCS):

Provide Board support for technology marketing and Media Relations: websites, social media, print media, and coordinate outreach to organizational partners, including Legislative Action. Equity and Diversity, AANHPI collaborations, Community Based Organizations and Businesses, and Faith-Based Organizations. Law Enforcement, Counseling and Mental Health Agencies, Recreation and After-School Programs, and Employment agencies. Provide professional mentoring to colleagues in Adult Education, Curriculum, Instruction, & Evaluation, Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, Secondary Education, Higher Education collaboration.

  • Create institutional memberships for organizations and school districts to encourage their partnership.
  • Develop and expand the Constant Contact E-News listserv and support Staff in creating content.
  • Schedule regular reviews of the website to streamline the information provided.
  • Schedule communication as a committee prior to the next Board Meeting to review goals and initiatives and provide assignments for Staff.
