VISIT TO SCHOOLS

NPIEN Board Members have visited the following schools, and provided presentations for students and teachers on preparation for college, career, and financial aid: Paramount USD: Paramount High School West Campus, Paramount High School, Lakewood Elementary School; Costa Mesa High School, Orange County, Long Beach USD: Hughes Middle School, Jackie Robinson Academy, Cabrillo High School, Cabrillo High School Jordan High School, Lakewood High School; Los Angeles USD: Carson High School; Centinela Valley UHSD: Leuzinger High School, Hawthorne High School, Hope Street Elementary School; Compton USD: Davis Middle School, Compton High School; Kennedy Elementary School; Long Beach USD: Stanford Middle School; Prarie Vista Middle School, Hawthorne School District

GUEST SPEAKERS have visited many of the schools from the Pacific Islander community, including DCFS Social Worker Vaka Faletau, Long Beach USD Asst. Superintendent Ruth Perez Ashley, Educator Rata Hannemann, Pomona College Director Iosefa Aina

CULTURAL FESTIVALS

NPIEN Board Members provide information booths or speak at cultural festivals about the importance of higher education, including: Independence Missouri USO Festival, Point Hueneme, CA USO Festival, Pacific Islander Community Council Festival, Harbor City, CA, Tafesilafai Festival, Long Beach, CA, Samoan Flag Day, Carson, CA

 

 

 

HUMANITARIAN PROJECTS

NPIEN has participated in the following:

Living Help Center Walk for Life, American Red Cross Blood Drive, Asians for Miracle Matches drive, Los Cerritos YMCA golf tournament, Miss South Pacific Pageant, PASS Golf Tournament, Carson High School Scholarship Fund, National Office of Samoan Affairs Fundraiser, APIA Vote Presidential Town Hall Sponsor, Lakewood High School Music Department Sponsor, CASCWA Conference Door Prize Sponsor, ALACOSA Scholarship.

 
NPIEN HONOREES & MINI-GRANTS FOR SCHOOLS

NPIEN annually recognizes students, educators, and community members for their academic achievements and service to the Pacific Islander community. Each honoree receives a medallion, plaque, and proclamations from their respective legislators.

The Christina Diaz Student Scholar Awards named after the late Christina Diaz, long-time NPIEN supporter and conference vendor, Ray’s Silvercrafts, Gourds, and Christina’s Hawaiian Soaps  recognize Pacific Islander students, grades 6-12, who were nominated by their teacher or counselor for achieving a minimum 2.5 GPA, outstanding or improved attendance, outstanding or improved grades, academic honors, participation in extracurricular activities, leadership ability, or service in school clubs, church, or the community.

The Sevia Ma’ae Educator Awards, named after the late Sevia Ma’ae, educator for the Lynwood Unified School District and founding NPIEN Board Member, recognize educators who have worked with Pacific Islander students and have demonstrated a commitment to Pacific Islander student achievement, sponsored a Pacific Islander Club or activity, or other forms of service.

The Dr. Alofa Tanuvasa Community Awards, named after the late Dr. Alofa Tanuvasa, educator for the Compton Unified School District, and tireless advocate for the Pacific Islander community, recognize business people, mentors, professionals, community-based organizations, and parent volunteers who have shown commitment to Pacific Islander student achievement and service to students and the school community.


NPIEN MINI-GRANT INFORMATION FOR SCHOOLS

NPIEN funds are used to award mini-grants, from $25 to $100, to support the activities of Pacific Islander Student Clubs in elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and college and universities. The purpose of the grants are to support the clubs in providing college and career activities and supporting cultural awareness activities.

Student clubs have used these funds to support activities such as guest speakers from the Pacific Islander community, or needed supplies for cultural dance performances such as costumes or dance implements.

Schools interested in applying for a mini-grant should send a letter stating the following:

  1. Type of event

  2. Purpose of the event

  3. Proposed budget  

  4. Contact Person/Information
